The Houston Texans have been without one major piece to their offense this season- running back Joe Mixon.
The Texans added Mixon last offseason when they acquired him via trade from the Cincinnati Bengals. Mixon then signed a three-year $27 million contract extension to remain with the Texans long term.
In his first season as a Texan last season, he had a productive season, rushing for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also had 36 catches for 309 receiving yards and a receiving touchdown. But this season, Mixon has remained sidelined.
Here’s the latest on Mixon’s status:
What Happened to Joe Mixon?
Joe Mixon dealt with foot injuries last year, and it’s carried into this offseason. The Texans’ star running back experienced more foot problems in the offseason, which held him out of the entire preseason.
Since Mixon wasn’t cleared to resume physical activities by the start of the season, the Texans placed him on the Reserve/Non-Football list, knocking him out a minimum of four games.
Will Joe Mixon Play This Week?
No, Joe Mixon will not play in Week 8 against the San Francisco 49ers. He still has not been activated off of IR. The Texans will once again be without Mixon, who still remains inactive. Running backs Nick Chubb and Woody Marks will be the two featured backs this week.
Joe Mixon Fantasy Outlook
There isn’t much of an outlook for Joe Mixon this season. Fans knew coming into the season that he would miss time to start the year, but not many expected him to possibly be out for the remainder of the season.
According to sources, there’s a chance that Mixon doesn’t play at all this year. Texans‘ general manager Nick Caserio said Mixon’s injury is a ‘complicated’ situation.
‘Over next three, four weeks, see how that goes over the duration,’ #Texans GM Nick Caserio on Joe Mixon. He was noncommittal on if he’ll play this season. Sources have consistently called it a ‘tough, complicated situation’ and expressed doubt that he will play this year…

For now, Nick Chubb has taken the bulk of the work in Mixon’s absence with rookie Woody Marks also being featured.
