The Cleveland Browns dropped a big update regarding Shedeur Sanders’ status ahead of this week’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback was a third stringer behind Joe Flacco and Dillon Gabriel in the depth chart. But since then, a lot that has changed.
Flacco has been traded leaving Sanders and Bailey Zappe the only signal-callers in the room. Earlier this week, head coach Kevin Stefanski was non-committal when being asked who will backup Gabriel in Sunday’s game. On Friday, Stefanski said Sanders has been made the backup quarterback for Sunday.

Fans started reacting to this update with one fan making a sarcastic joke about Sanders’ prior association with Colorado, who retired his jersey number.
“Colorado will name the stadium after him now he is QB2,” one fan wrote.
Some fans were just curious why ESPN would make an update about something they believe is irrelevant.
“We’re announcing people getting promoted to QB2 now??😭” another fan wrote.
“This might be the first breaking ESPN news headline of someone being named the backup QB midseason. This is just sad 😂” one fan added.
“Breaking news, the only other qb on the main roster is going to play backup. Who could have ever guessed?” one fan sarcastically added.
Some fans believes the move will backfire soon.
“I sense a lot of disappointment coming from this guy…” one fan posted.
“Shedeur Sanders is praying for a Gabriel ACL tear,” another fan commented.
Shedeur Sanders All Set to Take the Field Whenever an Opportunity Comes by With Browns
The move was always coming, as the fifth-round pick Shedeur Sanders should feature in an NFL regular season game if something were to happen to Dillon Gabriel. With everything happening around him, Sanders sounded confident about being close to an opportunity and doing everything he could to be prepared.
“We’re going to make sure we do everything we can to make sure Dillon’s ready for the game,” Sanders said. “Whatever that means. Each and every day, even when Joe was the starter, preparing the right way and being ready to know that you could get out there at any point in time. I’m overly confident within myself.
“I know when I first got here, I’m ready to play, but it’s up to the coaches and whatever decision they make then, I’m fine with.”
If Gabriel falters, the Browns might look at Sanders as their starter in the near future.
