Philip Rivers’ return to the NFL has been one of the best storylines of the latter part of the season. The 44-year-old, who retired in 2020, returned to the league after the Indianapolis Colts made an emergency call following injuries to starter Daniel Jones and backup Riley Leonard.
Fans in general wanted to see how a long-retired Rivers would do against one of the best defenses in the league last week. He brought the Colts within earshot of a victory against the Seattle Seahawks, in a 16-18 defeat.
Phil Rivers is UNDENIABLE

Now, this time against the San Francisco 49ers, he’s looking even better at home in Lucas Oil Stadium. In the first half of the game alone, he threw two touchdown passes.
Fans and analysts were all behind him this Monday Night Football.
“Phil Rivers is UNDENIABLE,” wrote ESPN’s Pat McAfee.
“Killing it. Reading that defense like he’s reading a comic book. So many talking heads looking foolish right now,” wrote one fan.
“70 and dropping dimes!? I love this. I’m happy for him! Damn, am I a Colts fan?,” joked another person.
“Someone told me this guy was 43 😳😳,” said a surprised fan.
Is it a Christmas miracle?
“Best story of the NFL season,” claimed one fan.
Could Rivers return for another season?
“I don’t want to see this end. They need him to come back next year also,” demanded another fan.
Fans were just amazed by the quarterback’s performance.
“Just think about it… Both Baker Mayfield and Bo Nix got only one TD pass each on the weekend. Phil Rivers have TWO already, just at the beggining of the 2nd quarter, against the Niners, on prime time MNF. Amazing,” wrote one fan.
Some fans were worried the Colts’ defense wouldn’t be up to the job of getting Philip Rivers a victory on Monday Night Football.
“Too bad Colts defense is going to ruin it,” said one fan in irony.
Philip Rivers Wants to Make the NFL Playoffs
Ahead of his first NFL career start in five years, Philip Rivers spoke with the press about his return to the game. At the time, he made it evidently clear that he wasn’t returning only to play a couple of games. He wants to help the Colts make the postseason.
“I’ve been out of the game for a few years, but I am so excited to be back,” Rivers said. “I thought my career might have been over, and I was OK with that. But I missed the game and missed all of you. I don’t take this for granted at all. We’re in this thing, dadgumit. We’re 8-5 and in the playoff hunt. We can get there. Why not us?”
So raced the hearts of many fans who have always thought a Super Bowl is all Rivers needs to cap off what is already a Hall of Fame-worthy career. Imagine if he gets a shot after coming out of retirement? One could only dream.
Sadly, the Colts’ defense is not helping him this Monday night. So far, he has thrown for 189 passing yards, with two touchdowns and a 62% completion percentage. Nonetheless, the Indianapolis defense has given up 31 points, and Rivers and the Colts trail 31-20.
