Eric Stonestreet recently shared a surprising story about his Modern Family co-star Sofía Vergara. While looking back on her past, he revealed that she had dated a major NFL name during the height of his career. The detail caught many fans off guard, since it was never widely known at the time.
That player turned out to be Kansas City Chiefs legend Tony Gonzalez. The Hall of Fame tight end is remembered as one of the greatest to ever play the position, dominating defenses for years in Kansas City before finishing his career with the Atlanta Falcons.
During an appearance on Like a Farmer Podcast, Stonestreet was asked about his Modern Family co-star and her dating rumors with Tom Brady. While Stonestreet refused to feed into the rumors, he ended up revealing that she once talked to him about dating Gonzalez.
“She dated Tony Gonzalez years ago, that’s a great story,” Stonestreet said. “So, when we first started hanging out and she’s getting to know me, I’m wearing a lot of Chiefs stuff. She goes, ‘Eric, are you Kansas fan?’ I said, ‘Yeah.’ [She said], ‘I used to date a Chief.’ I’m like, ‘Who?’ She’s like, ‘Tony Gonzalez, dummy.’” (From 49:29)
Stonestreet said that he had no idea who Vergara was when Gonzalez used to play for the Chiefs. Even as a hardcore Chiefs fan, he didn’t know about his dating history with Vergara. While the timeline of their dating history isn’t clear, Gonzalez was with the Chiefs from 1997 to 2008, and Vergara became popular in the mid-’00s.
Gonzalez got married to October Gonzalez in 2007. His time with Vergara remained private, but Stonestreet’s comments brought the story back into the spotlight.
Tony Gonzalez Offered To Pay Travis Kelce’s Fine
Gonzalez offered to pay Travis Kelce’s fine after Kelce broke Gonzalez’s franchise record for receiving touchdowns. The milestone came in the Chiefs’ win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Christmas Day 2024. Kelce celebrated by dunking the ball over the goal post, which incurred a 15-yard penalty.
The Hall of Fame tight end expressed admiration for Kelce’s achievement and said he would cover the cost of the penalty.
“”I am so happy for him. He is one of the best tight ends to ever do it on [and] off the field,” he said, as per FOX NEWS. “I’ve been following him since he was a rookie, and I’m not surprised by it. He is one of the greatest tight ends of all time.”
“If he dunks it, I will pay that fine.”
Kelce responded to Gonzalez on X, applauding him as the “greatest of all time.” He did remind Gonzalez that he would have to pay the fine, which Gonzalez happily obliged.
