Former NFL running back Doug Martin, who gained fame with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and later played for the Oakland Raiders, has died at 36. His family confirmed his death, though many circumstances remain unclear.
The incident reportedly began early Saturday morning when Oakland police responded to calls about a possible burglary and a medical emergency near the 11000 block of Ettrick Street, close to the Oakland Zoo. Officers encountered Martin at the scene and identified him as the suspected intruder.
Police accounts say he briefly resisted as officers tried to take him into custody. Shortly afterward, Martin became unresponsive. Emergency personnel provided medical aid before transporting him to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to TMZ, Martin’s death occurred while he was in police custody following the break-in response. The Oakland Police Department confirmed officers were involved in the encounter and that all have been placed on administrative leave during the investigation.

Several agencies, including the department’s Homicide Section, Internal Affairs Bureau, and outside oversight groups such as the Oakland Police Commission and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office, are reviewing the case.
So far, no official cause of death has been released by the authorities. Authorities have stated that results from an autopsy and toxicology testing will determine what happened. Martin’s family has asked for privacy as they await those findings.
