A report from ESPN has revealed that President Donald Trump wants to have the Washington Commanders‘ new stadium be named after him, raising many eyebrows. Trump loves to stick his name on things, from Trump Tower to his myriad of failed businesses like Trump University and Trump Steaks, so it would be unsurprising for the president to want to name a stadium in Washington after himself.
A report from NFL reporter Albert Breer has stated that by selling off the rights to rename the stadium, the team could make hundreds of millions of dollars over 20 years. He used several examples, most notable the SoFi Stadium in LA, which is worth $650 million over 20 years, as well as the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, worth over 800 million Canadian dollars over 20 years.
Just for context, the naming rights deal at SoFi Stadium in LA is worth $650 million over 20 years, and the one at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto is at $800 million (Canadian) over 20 years. So that’s what the @Commanders would be walking away from in not selling off the rights.

Breer did not name any particular party that the stadium could be named after, but the report did come after the president expressed interest in yet another vanity project that he would name after himself. He will attend the Commanders’ game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday as a guest of Commanders owner Josh Harris.
Despite this, ESPN has reported that the team itself does not have the power to name its own stadium, as the power lies in the city of Washington DC and the National Park Service.
The Commanders are currently playing at the Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. This new stadium will be located at the location of the team’s former RFK Stadium just nine miles away.
Donald Trump Previously Threatened To Block Commanders’ Stadium’s Construction But Ultimately Failed
Theis still unnamed stadium is set to cost $3.7 billion, with the city of Washington DC contributing $1 billion and the team covering $2.7 billion of the cost, though the right to name the stadium still falls under the city. Previously, however, Donald Trump tried to not let the project even happen.
The president was not fond of the name change from the Redskins to the Commanders, deeming it “woke.” The name change happened because the term “Redskins” was used as a slur and is offensive to Native Americans, but Trump was not happy with this and threatened to use his powers to block its approval.
Despite this, the city council of Washington DC voted 11-2 to construct the stadium, which Trump now wants to be named after himself.
