Schefter also reported that Trump will be taking part in halftime activities which will be honoring the troops. This comes as the US government is currently in shutdown even as Trump’s Republican Party holds both chambers of the House and the White House.
Trump had previously pressured the Commanders owner that he would block the construction of the new stadium in Washington DC if he did not change the team’s name back to the Redskins, which is considered an offensive slur to Native Americans. Trump deemed the name change “woke.”
This pressure from the White House would ultimately not stop the new stadium to push through, as the city’s DC Council voted 11-2 to build the new stadium, with the project name being the RFK Stadium Project. A total of t $2.7 billion is reportedly being invested by the Commanders and $1 billion by DC itself in its construction, with the new stadium projected to have 65,000 seats.
Donald Trump Would Not Have The Power To Name the Washington Commanders’ New Stadium, The City Does
For the past few months, Donald Trump has been feuding with DC Mayor Muriel Bowser over the president sending in troops to the city to “fight crime” even though the city’s crime rates have been going down. This may not bode well for the president’s wishes to have the new stadium be named after himself, as the power to do that ultimately falls to the city government itself.
A source told ESPN that even the Commanders do not have the authority to name the stadium, as the power lies in the city and the Park Service.
“The team doesn’t have the authority. They can’t name the stadium … on their own,” the source said. “The city would be involved in that decision, and the Park Service would be involved.”
The Commanders currently plays at the Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, which is 9 miles from where the new stadium would be, which is located at the site of the former RFK Stadium.
