However, their first-half performance against the Houston Texans raised plenty of eyebrows and concern among fans. The 49ers were sluggish from the opening drive, unable to find rhythm either through the air or on the ground.
By halftime, they trailed 16–7, a surprising deficit for a team that has looked dominant all season. struggled to move the chains consistently, while the Texans’ defense controlled the tempo, shutting down San Francisco’s game completely.
What stood out the most was the unusually quiet showing from Christian McCaffrey, who had just two carries for eight yards through two quarters. Fans were quick to notice the star running back’s limited involvement.

Social media lit up with speculation about whether McCaffrey was hurt or being held out of the action. Some fans even assumed he had suffered a setback. But as of now, there have been no reports of any injury to the 49ers’ running back.

McCaffrey was active and available, though the offense simply couldn’t get him going against a disciplined Texans front seven. It’s rare to see McCaffrey so quiet in a half of football, considering how instrumental he’s been to San Francisco’s offense.
Since joining the team in 2022, he has defined the team’s identity. So when he’s barely involved, it naturally raises questions. Still, there’s little reason for panic. Game flow and Houston’s defensive approach seem to be the main reasons for McCaffrey’s slow start.
Christian McCaffrey Comeback Player of the Year Case
McCaffrey’s 2025 season has been one of redemption and resurgence. After battling through injuries in recent years, the 28-year-old has returned to elite form and looks every bit the dynamic playmaker who once led the league in yards from scrimmage.
His consistency has reignited the 49ers’ offense and made him a strong candidate for the Comeback Player of the Year award. He’s been the engine that keeps San Francisco moving, turning short passes into long gains and punishing defenses with his vision and acceleration.
Beyond numbers, his ability to stay healthy has been the most impressive part of his comeback. Although his first-half performance against the Texans isn’t the most accurate representation of his run, McCaffrey is a worthy contender for the coveted honor.
