Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn took full responsibility for the devastating injury suffered by quarterback Jayden Daniels during Sunday night’s 38–14 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
When the Commanders were trailing 38-7 late in the fourth quarter, Daniels was sacked by Seahawks linebacker Drake Thomas. Due to the hit, his left elbow was dislocated and he had to be carted off the field in an air-cast.
On Monday, Quinn expressed regret on his decision making. With the game already getting out of hands in the fourth quarter, the head coach believes he should not have let Daniels, who was returning from a hamstring injury, stay in the field.
“I’ve been thinking about it nonstop too and, man, I missed it,” Quinn told reporters. “That is 100% on me.”
The head coach also talked about that their strategy was not to allow any plays in which the quarterback has to scramble.
“Honestly, that’s where I missed it,” Quinn said. “Of course he scrambled. It’s Jayden. It’s what he’s special at. The hindsight part is the hardest one. That’s what I think about all night and nonstop.”
What’s Next For Jayden Daniels And Dan Quinn’s Commanders?
Jayden Daniels led the Commanders deep into the conference championship game last season. However, this season has been far from easy both in terms of results and injuries. The quarterback previously missed games this season due to knee sprain and hamstring injury.
The latest elbow injury will be another setback for the second-year quarterback looking to build upon his breakout year.
For the Commanders especially, the injury was a brutal loss to their already miserable season. They sit at 3-6 after the latest loss and their playoff hopes are already gone.
With Daniels sidelined at least for four games, the Commanders will turn to backup quarterback Marcus Mariota. It will also not be easy for the backup quarterback to start making accurate throws from the get go.
Dan Quinn’s side will next face the Detroit Lions on Sunday.
