If you have a running back like Derrick Henry, you probably want to use him as much as possible, right? Well, it doesn’t seem so for the Baltimore Ravens. ESPN analyst and former NFL quarterback, Dan Orlovsky, shared a disturbing stat about the Ravens’ running back this Thursday.

According to Orlovsky’s research, the Ravens are the team that uses their running back the least in first and second down situations in the league:
“Found out something about the Baltimore Ravens this morning that shocked me… I’m not a massive numbers person, but there are times when I see things on tape… Found this out about the Ravens, and again, it absolutely shocked me. A month into the season, the Baltimore Ravens, with Derrick Henry, are the 32nd-ranked offense in the NFL when it comes to giving the ball to their running back on first or second down. Meaning, they run the football on first and second down with their running backs the least out of everybody in the NFL. The Ravens. Yet, when they do it, they’re second in yards per carry at six (yards)… (To) summarize it, the Ravens on first and second down, the Ravens give the ball to their running backs less than anybody in the NFL, yet when they do, they’re the second-best offense in doing that. The Baltimore Ravens with Derrick Henry? That shocks me.”
This certainly feels like an underutilization of an asset by the Baltimore Ravens. It would help to explain how one of the best rosters in the league is currently saddled with a losing record of 1-3.
What are Derrick Henry’s numbers so far this season?
When one examines Derrick Henry’s personal statistics, a similar picture begins to emerge. So far, the Ravens’ running back has recorded 284 rushing yards, which is eighth in the league. He has three rushing touchdowns, which is sixth among players in the league. Yet, he has only been handed the ball 49 times, which is 24th among players’ carries.
Again, the picture that emerges is one of the Baltimore Ravens underutilizing one of their most effective offensive assets. This appears to be a case of offensive mismanagement on the part of the coaching staff.
