NFL analyst Colin Cowherd is not ready to give credit to J.J. McCarthy after the Minnesota Vikings defeated the Detroit Lions 27–24 on the road in Week 9. Returning from a high ankle sprain. McCarthy completed 14 of 25, passing for 143 yards, two passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and an interception.
However, despite McCarthy’s solid performance in the win, Cowherd instead gave the credit to head coach Kevin O’Connell and wide receiver Justin Jefferson for the win.
“My take on J.J. McCarthy, he was good on script,” Cowherd said. “First quarter, 141 passer rating. Rest of the game, his passer rating was 38. I’m buying the coach, Kevin O’Connell. I’m buying Justin Jefferson. But J.J. McCarthy, I felt like I was watching Michigan J.J. McCarthy.
“Don’t screw it up, and make one big throw. Kevin O’Connell has made Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold look like first-ballot Hall of Famers. J.J. McCarthy, on script, with this brilliant head coach, Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, and this Pro Bowl left tackle — he’s very good on script and deserves credit for it.”
Cowherd also mentioned about the excellent third-and-5 pass to Jalen Nailor for 16 yards late in the game. He added:
“And at the end of the game, J.J. McCarthy made one great third-down throw.”

J.J McCarthy Positive After Registering Win On Return From Injury
J.J McCarthy suffered a high ankle sprain in September against the Atlanta Falcons. The second-year quarterback was on injured reserve before returning for the game against the Detroit Lions. Following the 27-24 win, that saw him make a clutch throw to run Lions out of time, McCarthy was overjoyed.
“It was awesome,” McCarthy said. “When you’re hurt, being on IR last year, and being out for five weeks, it absolutely kills me not being out there with those guys because I love every single one of them. I know they got my back — and I’ve got theirs — the rest of the way.”
The win puts Vikings back on map atleast as they now need to stitch multiple wins to make sure they get a spot in the playoffs.
