“Go Back to College”: Chip Kelly Faces Shannon Sharpe’s Wrath Amid Abrupt Raiders Firing After Just 11 Games

Former NFL tight end Shannon Sharpe, on his podcast “Nightcap”, along with Chad “Ocho” Johnson, responded to Chip Kelly’s dismissal as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator. The Vegas-based franchise suffered a 24-10 loss against the Cleveland Browns, marking their fifth loss in a row and their ninth overall loss of the 2025 season.

Sharpe, on his podcast, didn’t hold back on his views about Kelly, suggesting he should go back to college football.

“He needs to stay in college”, Sharpe began on his podcast (0:34).

“Go back to college (football). You can have a great career in college”, he further elaborated (2:15).

Sharpe also touched upon how Kelly, despite being the league’s highest-earning offensive coordinator, needs to go back to what he does best: doing things that have previously worked for him. He highlighted how difficult it is to change doing something someone’s done their entire life, insinuating that Kelly’s best suited for college football.

Meanwhile, Chad “Ocho” Johnson also weighed in on Kelly’s dismissal, suggesting that, given the season the Raiders have had so far, it was imminent for someone to take the blame, and it couldn’t have been head coach Pete Carroll or a quarterback, most likely referring to Geno Smith.

Despite the Raiders’ abysmal offensive output so far this season, he questioned their decision to fire Kelly in the middle of the season, suggesting that the team can’t learn a brand-new style of offense suddenly.

“We in the middle of the season, right? You let the offensive coordinator go. So what plays we call it now? Or we have someone else calling the same exact offense cuz we can’t learn a brand new offense”, Ocho stated (0:56).

While Sharpe agreed to Ocho’s assessment that the Raiders will continue to play the same brand of offense, he also stated how a different pair of eyes can sometimes make a difference as far as the results are concerned.

Chip Kelly’s stint as the Raiders’ offensive coordinator was his third gig in the NFL, with a previous one being with the Philadelphia Eagles back in 2013, whilst also being the 49ers’ head coach in 2016.

Josh Pate Urges Kelly To Make A Return To College Football

Meanwhile, college football analyst Josh Pate recently responded to Chip Kelly’s dismissal, urging him to come back to college football.

Pate posted a heartfelt message about the former Ohio State offensive coordinator on X, writing:

“You belong with us. Come home.”

Chip Kelly, before moving to Vegas, had a considerable amount of success as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator, helping the Buckeyes build a championship-winning side in 2024.

His past college football experience consists of several programs, including being the head coach of Oregon and the UCLA Bruins.
