Are The Chiefs Out Of The Playoffs? Updated AFC Standings And Scenarios After Week 14

It is safe to say that the Kansas City Chiefs are in trouble after losing 20-10 to the Houston Texans. After that loss, the Chiefs are now sitting at No. 10 in the AFC, outside of the Top 7, as they currently have a 6-7 record, which is the same as the No. 11 Miami Dolphins. This begs the question, are they out of contention for the playoffs?

The answer to that is no, as they can still make it, but they have to win their next few games and hope a lot of AFC teams ranked above and below them also lose. Despite this, they are now a long shot to make it at this stage, but Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and company have been able to pull off unbelievable odds before.

The team has had a bad season, as injuries piled up, with their usual stars not playing as well. They have to channel the Chiefs of two years ago to win, as they have a tough next few games, all of them a must-win scenario.

First, they take on the LA Chargers on Sunday, and then they must prevent an upset by the Tennessee Titans a week later. They then take on the No. 1 Denver Broncos on Christmas Day, before ending the season against the Las Vegas Raiders. Should the Chiefs lose just one of these games, then it may be game over for them.

They also need all the other teams in the AFC, particularly the Texans, the Bills, the Colts, the Ravens and the Chargers to all lose. They get a chance to beat the Chargers next week, and this should put pressure on the other teams, such as the Denver Broncos.

In other words, the Chiefs’ fate is not just in the team’s hands, but also in others, as they need several other teams to lose.

Kansas City Chiefs On Worst Season Of The Patrick Mahomes Era

After that loss to the Houston Texans on Sunday, the nine-year streak of the Kansas City Chiefs being the AFC West champions has officially been ended, as they could simply not catch up to the 11-2 Denver Broncos on top of the division. This also marks the worst season the Chiefs have had in the Patrick Mahomes era.

This is now the most losses the Chiefs have incurred since Patrick Mahomes became the starting quarterback in 2018 and this is also the first time the team fell to under .500 since 2012. The team still has a chance to make it to the playoffs, but that should be a hard road ahead.
