Is Carson Wentz Starting? Kevin O’Connell Reveals J.J. McCarthy’s Replacement Ahead of Week 7 vs. Eagles

In the Minnesota Vikings’ Week 2 game against the Atlanta Falcons, quarterback J.J. McCarty suffered an ankle injury and left the game. He’s been sidelined for the Vikings’ last three games.

While there was a chance of McCarthy returning this week against the Philadelphia Eagles, head coach Kevin O’Connell ruled him out on Friday, announcing that Carson Wentz would get another start.

NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport tweeted:

Despite being sidelined, it was a good sign to see J.J. McCarthy back at practice this week, even on a limited basis. There’s a good chance he returns in Week 8 against the Los Angeles Chargers for Thursday Night Football.

Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Carson Wentz Is Set to Face His Former Team

Carson Wentz was drafted second overall in the 2016 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. This Sunday, he will face them for a second time in his career. Wentz faced the Eagles when he was the Washington Commanders’ quarterback during the 2022 season. The Eagles won 24-8.

Wentz was with the Eagles from 2016 to 2020 and was named a Pro Bowler and All-Pro during the 2017 season. A torn ACL stopped him from winning MVP that season, as the Eagles went on to win the Super Bowl with an improbable run with Nick Foles.

Carson Wentz was traded to the Indianapolis Colts prior to the 2022 season, with the Eagles electing to roll with Jalen Hurts at quarterback. Since then, Wentz has been on five different teams in the last five years, mainly serving as a backup.

So far this season, Wentz is 2-1 as the Vikings’ starter, and has a chance to win a third game this season, which would come against the team that drafted him. He has thrown for 759 yards, five touchdowns, and two interceptions.
