Cardinals Depth Chart: Zay Jones’ Season-Ending Injury Leaves Jonathan Gannon Short on Targets

The Arizona Cardinals have taken another major hit on offense. Veteran wide receiver Zay Jones has been ruled out for the rest of the 2025 season after suffering a torn Achilles in Sunday’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

The injury was confirmed by the team on Monday, with head coach Jonathan Gannon acknowledging that Jones will be placed on injured reserve. For an offense already short on experience, losing Jones is a significant blow.

Jones’ arrival was meant to bring reliability to a developing passing unit led by Marvin Harrison Jr. and receiver Michael Wilson. Through nine games, Jones had provided a steady veteran presence, catching 12 passes for 183 yards and serving as a trusted option on third downs.

Harrison Jr. remains the unquestioned focal point. The rookie has been as good as advertised, producing at a high level and commanding double coverage in most matchups. With Jones out, Harrison will likely see even more defensive attention, forcing the coaching staff to get creative in scheming him open.

Michael Wilson now moves into the WR2 role, giving him a chance to take on more volume after an up-and-down start to the season. Wilson’s size and ability to win contested catches will be key in replacing some of the physicality Jones brought to the perimeter.

Behind them, Greg Dortch should continue to handle the slot duties. Dortch has been one of the more reliable short-area options in Gannon’s system and will likely see increased snaps in three-receiver sets.

Xavier Weaver is another name expected to step up. The coaching staff has already singled him out as a player ready for a larger workload, and his speed gives the Cardinals a vertical element they’ll need to stretch defenses.

Beyond that core group, depth becomes a concern. Simi Fehoko, who would’ve been next in line for outside reps, is also out with an arm injury.

    What Happened to Zay Jones?

Jones went down in the second quarter of Sunday’s matchup against the Seahawks. The play appeared routine, he was running a short route before pulling up and grabbing at the back of his leg. Medical staff quickly assisted him off the field, and he did not return.

Postgame evaluations confirmed the worst: a torn Achilles, ending his 2025 campaign. Before the injury, Jones had been a stabilizing force for a young Cardinals offense still finding rhythm under new quarterback Kyler Murray’s leadership.

With him sidelined, Jonathan Gannon and offensive coordinator Drew Petzing now face the challenge of keeping the unit functional amid shrinking experience and growing expectations for their young wideouts.
