Cam Newton Minces No Words On 49ers’ ‘Quarterback Controversy’ as Mac Jones Leads Team To Thrilling 26-23 vs LA Rams

Even with QB1 Brock Purdy missing action and several key players injured, the banged up San Francisco 49ers still won against the LA Rams on the road. A big reason for that is Mac Jones, the Niners’ backup quarterback who was seen as one of the reasons San Francisco won that Week 4 game.

Jones’ performance, throwing 49 and making 33 of them, leading to two touchdowns, was widely praised, with the 49ers now 3-0 with him as the starting quarterback while Brock Purdy recovers from turf toe. However. this raises some questions some questions at San Francisco, especially what will happen when Purdy finally returns.

During his appearance on ESPN’s “First Take,” legendary QB Cam Newton was asked about this ongoing “quarterback controversy” at the Bay Area, and Newton did not hold back on his thoughts:

“He has a good problem, and you know, what’s funny is history seems to repeat itself,” said Newton. “The same way you got the spot is almost the same way you’re going to get put out the spot. But I will say this about Mac Jones. Mac Jones is a starter in this NFL that we know, and he would very well still be a starter given the circumstances of his performances in New England.” (9:30)

Newton added that he does not think that Brock Purdy’s QB1 job is on the line, especially with Jones’ style of play, with the former quarterback questioning if he could keep this type of playstyle up for an entire season. He then noted that the San Francisco coaching staff also would not consider benching Purdy, who has led the 49ers to a Super Bowl appearance.

49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Was All Praises For Mac Jones After Win vs. Rams

With the 49ers rolling whenever Mac Jones is the starter, head coach Kyle Shanahan was singing his praises.

“He played his a** off, man,”the coach said. “He was unbelievable in the first half. Got banged up a little bit there in the second half and battled through it.”

Shanahan continued praising Jones for protecting the ball and going against the tight LA Rams defense and not turning it over. He added that he “can’t say enough good things about Mac.”

As for Brock Purdy, the coach noted that he is still “week to week” with no timetable for his return. As the 49ers head to Week 6, Jones is the one expected to start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
