With Drake Maye under center, the New England Patriots have risen like the phoenix this season. With Sunday’s victory over the New York Jets, New England improved to an overall record of 9-2, remaining in firm command of the AFC East. They’re also tied with the Denver Broncos for the best record in the whole of the NFL.
Drake has been a significant contributor to the Patriots’ resurgence, with 2025 marking a breakthrough year for the third overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. While fans are ready to sing the praises of the former North Carolina quarterback, Cam Newton believes that those around the NFL should wait a bit more before determining Drake’s value as a long-term asset for the franchise. Overall, he believes that fans need to wait and see if the Patriots are truly worth their weight in gold.
A few days ago, Newton called the Patriots ‘Fool’s gold,’ seemingly implying that only a fool would pick them over more mature teams. To this, Drake Maye replied during a recent media appearance:
“I don’t even know what show he’s on… I think they get paid to make certain comments.”
On Thursday’s edition of ESPN’s “First Take” at Bethune-Cookman University, Newton replied to Maye’s comments, saying:
“I did say, the Patriots are fool’s gold. Drake Maye, respectfully, you’re having a great season, but I also put Drake Maye in the position where it’s like, yo, we don’t really know… This is merely a warning, don’t keep poking this bear.”
