Is C.J. Stroud Hurt? Texans QB Heads to Medical Tent After Scary Hit Mid-Game vs. Broncos

C.J. Stroud’s promising 2025 campaign took a worrying turn during the Houston Texans’ clash with the Denver Broncos. The Texans, who entered the game at 3-4 and aiming to stay alive in the AFC playoff race, saw their young quarterback exit in the second quarter following a hard collision on a scramble attempt.

The play unfolded when Stroud took off from the pocket, slid near midfield, and was hit by a Broncos defender as his helmet struck the turf. He immediately appeared shaken up and was escorted to the medical tent for evaluation.

Shortly after, he was ruled questionable to return with a possible concussion. The hit silenced the home crowd as team staff assisted the 2023 Offensive Rookie of the Year off the field.

“#Texans QB CJ Stroud, who took a hard hit while sliding, is headed to the locker room for further evaluation,” Ian Rapoport REPORTED.

Before the injury, Stroud had been off to another solid start, continuing to show poise and accuracy that made him one of the league’s brightest young stars. Through seven games this season, he has totaled 1,623 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing nearly 67% of his passes.

He’s also added 177 rushing yards to his total, proving once again he’s more than a pocket passer. This setback, however, could have serious implications for Houston’s offense. Stroud’s presence is central to everything the Texans do.

The Texans have been careful with his workload since his rookie year, especially given his mobility and playmaking instincts, but any concussion-related issue would likely lead to precautionary rest. The team and fans will be anxiously awaiting further updates as medical evaluations continue.

Davis Mills Replaced C.J. Stroud After Injury

Backup quarterback Davis Mills stepped in following Stroud’s departure. Mills, a 2021 third-round pick out of Stanford, has served as Houston’s primary reserve for the past few seasons. Though he has seen limited action in 2025, Mills remains familiar with the offensive system.

This season, Mills has only attempted a handful of passes, totaling 23 yards without a touchdown or interception. His previous starting experience, however, gives the Texans a level of stability most teams lack when turning to a backup.

The Texans are expected to lean on Mills temporarily if Stroud misses time, but their offensive ceiling will clearly dip without their star quarterback. Mills can execute the playbook, but he lacks Stroud’s precision and mobility.

For Houston, the next week will be crucial, balancing Stroud’s health with the need to stay competitive. The Texans will hope the injury proves minor, as their playoff ambitions largely depend on the availability and performance of their young franchise leader.
