The Cleveland Browns continue to face uncertainty at the most important position in football. As they prepare for their upcoming matchup against the New York Jets, the quarterback situation involving Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel remains one of the biggest storylines in Cleveland.
Gabriel has started the last several games, but with the offense struggling to move the ball, there’s growing speculation that a change could be coming. Fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders is waiting in the wings, and many around the organization believe it’s only a matter of time before he gets his shot under center.
The Browns’ season has been disappointing so far. Sitting at 2–6, they’ve struggled to find rhythm on offense and consistency on defense, leaving fans frustrated after what was supposed to be a more competitive year.
Insider Tony Grossi recently shared his thoughts on the situation, suggesting that Dillon Gabriel’s starting job could be in serious jeopardy. When asked on ESPN Cleveland if Gabriel will be the starting QB against the Jets, he said:
“I think so, but I’m not sure. Regardless of what Kevin has said repeatedly, it depends on what the committee decided, and we will find out the result today.”

When pressed on whether he believes Shedeur Sanders could start over Gabriel, Grossi acknowledged that it’s entirely possible. His comments have added fuel to the ongoing debate about who should lead the offense moving forward.
If Gabriel struggles again, the coaching staff may decide to give Sanders a chance to showcase his potential. However, the Browns must weigh the benefits of making a switch midseason against the risks of stunting a young quarterback’s development.
Mike Florio Shuts Down Shedeur Sanders’ QB1 Rumors
While speculation continues to swirl, NFL insider Mike Florio offered a more grounded perspective on the Browns’ quarterback dilemma. In his recent analysis, he pointed out that Cleveland’s problems run far deeper than the quarterback position.
The team’s roster, he argued, is not built to consistently win games in the AFC right now. Florio noted that four starts simply aren’t enough to determine whether Dillon Gabriel can develop into a long-term franchise quarterback.
“Still, at 2-6, the Browns are likely not competing for a playoff spot in the ultra-competitive AFC … Gabriel has shown flashes of potential, and the failure to win games is far from being his fault,” Florio wrote.
Florio also highlighted that the Browns’ issues extend beyond offensive execution. Outside of defensive star Myles Garrett and a handful of reliable contributors, the roster lacks the depth and firepower needed to compete with the top teams in the conference.
