‘His Luck Finally Went Out’: Browns Insider Grills Dillon Gabriel After Ex Oregon Star Struggles Massively Against Patriots

Former Oregon Ducks quarterback Dillon Gabriel was named the Cleveland Browns starting quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings game. Gabriel has led the Browns in four games so far and the only win he registered was against the already struggling Miami Dolphins.

The latest 32-13 loss against the New England Patriots could be the final nail in the coffin, assumes Browns insider Tony Rizzo. With Shedeur Sanders backing Gabriel up, the former Oregon quarterback is running out of opportunities.

“Dylan Gabriel looked like Dylan Gabriel,” Rizzo said after the Browns loss vs Patriots. “His luck finally ran out with the picks. He also gave up a safety. Chris, I’ve seen enough. I said I’ve seen enough last week. But if Shedeur can’t stay healthy, you’re going to need him on the field.”

It seems Rizzo is ready to move on from another Browns quarterback this season. The Browns started the season naming former Super Bowl champion Joe Flacco as their starting quarterback of the season. But his awful performances led to getting traded to the Cincinnati Bengals who were also struggling with Jake Browning at the helm after Joe Burrow’s injury.

How Dillon Gabriel Performed In Loss Vs Patriots?

In the 32-13 loss, Dillon Gabriel completed 21 of 35 passes for 156 yards, with 2 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. His passer rating for the game was 65.9. Gabriel’s struggles also involved a costly mistake where the QB was called for intentional grounding in the end zone, resulting in a safety for the Patriots.

Despite the loss, head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t put the blame on the quarterback directly while acknowledging that there will be ups and downs.

“When you lose like this, you have to look at everything,” Stefanski said. “Every position. Everything I’m doing. Just … it’s frustrating for where we are as a team. So, every position you have to look at. But let me say that, with a young quarterback, you know, you understand that there’s going to be ups and downs.”

Stefanski also wondered why Gabriel didn’t pass any receptions to Jerry Jeudy who is the team’s top receiver. The Oregon alum passed two time in Jerry’s direction but none were completed.

“We need to do a better job,” Stefanski said. “I need to do a better job. Jerry needs to get the football. We have to do a better job. Variety of reasons (why he didn’t catch any), but it doesn’t matter. We’ve got to get him the ball.”

It remains to be seen whether Gabriel will get more opportunities or is it the end of the road for him like Rizzo suggested.
