Prior to the start of the 2025-2026 NFL season, the San Francisco 49ers made quarterback Brock Purdy one of the highest-paid players at his position, signing him to a five-year, $265 million contract extension.
Unfortunately for Purdy, he got banged up in Week 1 against the Seattle Seahawks, suffering a shoulder and turf toe injury. He was forced to miss a few games and then returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Despite retuning back to the field and being active in Week 4, Purdy has remained sidelined since.
What Happened to Brock Purdy?
As mentioned above, Brock Purdy got injured in the team’s season opener, suffering a minor shoulder injury, but now what seems to be a serious turf toe injury.
While he did return in Week 4, the lingering injury has bothered him to the point where he’s had to be sidelined again. Head coach Kyle Shanahan admitted this week that the injury is going to linger for the rest of the season no matter what.

Will Brock Purdy Play This Week?
Brock Purdy was limited at practice this week on Wednesday, and is making good progress to making his return back to the field. Oddly enough, if he is healthy, he could serve as Mac Jones’ backup as the next step to getting back to the No. 1 spot per GM John Lynch.
#49ers Brock Purdy (toe) is making good progress and will be evaluated at the end of the week, per John Lynch
Purdy has an opportunity to be suited up as the backup QB IF he is healthy and Lynch noted:
“That could be the next step to getting back to the #1 spot.”

This has caused some speculation. Some think that Purdy could be Jones’ backup for the remainder of the season due to how well Jones has been playing. We’ll see how that situation plays out.
Brock Purdy Fantasy Outlook
It’s anybody’s guess as to what Brock Purdy‘s fantasy outlook will be for the remainder of the season. He could return this week as he starter (though it seems unlikely) and go back to being a top-10 quarterback in the league. Or, he could continue to backup Jones on a week-to-week basis for much of the season.
For that, it’s safe to stay away from Purdy in fantasy.
Brock Purdy Fantasy Replacements
Keep on rolling with Mac Jones if you have been already. Jones has been playing exceptionally well, completing 67.2 percent of his passes and 1,832 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions this season.
Other solid quarterbacks on the waiver wire that could be picked up include Aaron Rodgers, Marcus Mariota, or Jacoby Brissett.
