The San Francisco 49ers have had to deal with a heavily depleted offense throughout the season so far. Brock Purdy, George Kittle, and Ricky Pearsall are the most important players who have missed some time off the field so far. Despite this, they have soared to a respectable 5-2 record with quarterback Mac Jones under center. On the defensive side of things, they have also lost Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, who are out for the season.
However, of course, the fandom and the organization would like to see 2022’s “Mr Irrelevant” back in the starting lineup. However, the toe injury Purdy sustained has been more difficult to resolve than expected. While he has been seen back at practice with the team, reports are that he’s still limited and in a recovery process.

The latest reports from The Athletic are that the recovery process took a hit this week as the 49ers prepare for Week 8 and that the quarterback is starting to feel the pressure that his job might be in danger.
What happened to Brock Purdy?
Brock Purdy suffered a hyperextension of his right big toe, which is a “turf toe” injury that tore the stabilizing ligaments under the joint in the Week 1 season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. He was able to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 4, but the injury was aggravated. The injury occurred as he ran out of bounds, and a Seahawks player fell over his heel.
Is Brock Purdy Playing This Week?
It’s a complete unknown when Purdy will return. Even as the team states he’s close to full recovery, reports are that he isn’t. For several weeks now, it has seemed like his return is imminent, and then it doesn’t happen. This doesn’t inspire confidence.
The Athletic’s Dianna Russini said this about the situation this week:
“I was told that he didn’t really feel that great,” Russini said, per 49ers Webzone. “So, we’ll see how this progresses over the next few days. And he shared, too, how frustrated he is. He doesn’t want to sit and watch this happen, especially after just getting paid.”
She added, “And it sounds like it’s one of those nagging pains, too, where it’s just like you’re trying, you feel like you can go a little bit more, and then when you push it—that’s when the pain comes back. We’ll see how they figure that out.”
Brock Purdy Fantasy Outlook
It might be time to trade the embattled quarterback before he loses all value, and if you find a player in your league willing to take the risk. His return timeline seems murky at best, and it’s completely unknown how he will look once he returns.
In his single game since the injury, a 21-26 defeat to the Jaguars, Brock Purdy looked bad. He threw for 309 yards, with two touchdowns, but he also had two interceptions and had a 57.8% completion percentage.
If you can’t trade him, bench him, and resign yourself to not playing him until he returns and demonstrates he can be his old self.
