The San Francisco 49ers have been plagued with a ton of injuries to its biggest stars all season, and one of the biggest names sidelined is their QB1 himself, Brock Purdy. Purdy has been dealing with a condition called turf toe, which might sound funny, but is actually a painful toe injury.
An update to the star quarterback’s injury has now been revealed, however, as the NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport has reported that Purdy might finally be able to play “next week,” as said by 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
#49ers coach Kyle Shanahan indicated QB Brock Purdy has a real chance to play next week: “I do believe he’s further along than was (when he first came back) so hopefully he’ll have a chance this week.”

It should be noted that he has not been cleared to play yet and that Shanahan is just optimistic of their QB1’s return to the field. The comment from the coach came after the Niners lost to the LA Rams 42-26 on Sunday. Purdy was listed as inactive during that game.
Shanahan was reportedly asked how close was Purdy to returning, and here was what the coach told reporters:
“Yes, it depends on how close to 100 percent he gets. Our dilemma, or what we’re trying not to do, is put him out in the situation we did versus Jacksonville five weeks ago or six, whatever it was. I do believe he’s closer and further along than what he was at that time, so hopefully he’ll have a chance this week,” he said.
His return might be timely for Week 11, especially as backup quarterback Mac Jones struggled against the Rams, though he did try to rally the team later in the game, but it was too late.
Debate On Who Should San Francisco’s Starter Be As Brock Purdy Nears Return
San Francisco has been very optimistic about Brock Purdy’s return as of late. The quarterback led the team to a Super Bowl previously and has been its anchor, but backup Mac Jones has also been playing well, and this has led many to question who should be the starting QB.
Jones, despite being the backup, has been putting up QB1 numbers for the Niners, being second in passing yards per game, eighth in completion percentage over expectation, ninth in completion percentage and 10th in yards per attempt, making him one of the top active quarterbacks in the NFL right now.
Brock Purdy’s return could change that, as Jones may be relegated back to the bench.
