Brian Daboll Replacement: 5 Coaching Candidates That Can Replace Giants HC Ft. Bill Belichick

It seems the front office of the New York Giants has had enough of Brian Daboll as head coach. Reports by ESPN’s Adam Schefter are that the NFL team has decided to fire the coach, following Sunday’s defeat to the Chicago Bears, which brought their record to 2-8.

Now with Daboll out of the door, the Giants are looking for a new coach to lead them through the rest of the season and through the foreseeable future.

5 Coaching Candidates That Can Replace Brian Daboll as New York Giants HC

    #5 Bill Belichick

Bill Belichick’s college football career at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, hasn’t been going great. The Tar Heels have an overall record of 4-5, and while they’re still in bowl contention, they’re nowhere near being a ranked team. Better to leave for the NFL? Perhaps. He has the pedigree and the connections. Belichick was a coach for the Giants for more than a decade and won his first Super Bowl as their defensive coordinator. Still, it seems far-fetched.

    #4 Mike McCarthy

Another Super Bowl champion. McCarthy has been out of a job since the Dallas Cowboys fired him in 2024. His stint with America’s team wasn’t a successful one, as he failed to advance beyond the divisional round on three occasions in a five-season period. On top of that, he didn’t reach the postseason in his last two seasons. However, his tenure as head coach of the Green Bay Packers was more successful, as the team reached the postseason every year from 2009 to 2016. In that period, they won the Super Bowl in the 2010 season.

    #3 Lane Kiffin

An upgrade for the Ole Miss Rebels coach? Kiffin hasn’t been in the NFL since 2008 and has mainly become a staple of college football. A job with the Giants could certainly mean a bigger salary and a more public profile for him. Still, he’s closer than ever to taking the Rebels to the College Football Playoff for the first time. It’s unlikely he would want to leave.

    #2 Kliff Kingsbury

Kingsbury has been mentioned as a potential replacement for Daboll. It would be a fresh perspective, given that he is currently the offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders. As such, he knows the NFC East. He also brings limited head coaching experience, having been the Texas Red Raiders head coach from 2013 until 2018 and then the Arizona Cardinals head coach from 2019 until 2022. He took the Cardinals once to the postseason in 2021.

    #1 Mike Kafka

Easily the easiest choice here, as it would just mean the promotion of the offensive coordinator to head coach duties. He’s already their interim head coach and knows their system deeply. His experience in offense could be key to working out Jaxson Dart’s adaptation to the league, which is where the Giants’ future lies. This is his first chance at the big chair.

Who Is the Giants’ Interim HC?

The Giants’ interim head coach in the wake of Brian Daboll’s firing is Mike Kafka. He has been New York’s offensive coordinator since 2022, and before that, he was the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterbacks coach for several years. He has never before been a head coach.

He was a quarterback for Northwestern in the late 2000s, and then spent half a decade as a journeyman signal-caller in the NFL between 2010 and 2015. He was a fourth-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft.
