The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were not just crushed during their devastating 7-34 loss to the LA Rams on Sunday, but they may have also lost QB1 Baker Mayfield. Mayfield was seen clutching his non-throwing shoulder late in the first half and then exited the game, with backup quarterback Teddy Bridgewater taking over for him.
He did not return, with the Bucs failing to score a single point after Mayfield left. As the game ended, Mayfield was reportedly seen wearing a sling on his non-throwing arm.
What Happened To Baker Mayfield?
Soon after that devastating loss to the LA Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles gave an update on their QB1’s injury, revealing that Baker Mayfield had suffered a shoulder sprain. This was on his non-throwing arm, but it was still painful. This is the same shoulder on which he had previously suffered a torn labrum back in 2021, which means that he already has a history of getting injured in that part of his body.
The severity of this injury is still unknown and Mayfield will still need to get an MRI to see the extent of that injury, and he is scheduled to have one on Monday, according to Bowles.
Is Baker Mayfield Playing Week 13?
For now, it is still unknown whether he will be able to play on Week 13, which will be against the Arizona Cardinals. It will depend on the results of Monday’s MRI, as shoulder injuries may take weeks to heal, though some do in just a few days, as was the case for New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr, who came back just one week after suffering a shoulder sprain.
Given that Mayfield has prior history of getting that specific shoulder injured, however, it is more than likely that he might miss a few weeks.
Baker Mayfield Fantasy Outlook
For now, Fantasy managers better wait for Monday’s MRI results, as there is still a chance that he might be able to come back next week against the Cardinals. However, they better be prepared to sit him for a few weeks should the MRI results say otherwise.
Best Waiver Wire Pickups To Replace Baker Mayfield
Teddy Bridgewater is slated to be the one playing should the MRI results not be in Mayfield’s favor, so picking him up via the waiver wire should be a good idea. However, an alternative would be Steelers backup QB Mason Rudolph, who is currently benefitting from Aaron Rodgers getting injured.
