Las Vegas Raiders running back Ashton Jeanty may be seeing playing time sooner rather than later, as a recent development suggests, much to the delight of onlookers. On Saturday, Dec. 27, football analyst and reporter Adam Schefter uploaded a post on his official X/Twitter account to report on the latest update coming from Jeanty’s playing availability amidst the 2025 NFL season.
As Schefter shares publicly, Jeanty is expected to suit up for interim coach Antonio Pierce’s Raiders‘ marquee matchup for Week 17 of the current campaign on Sunday, Dec. 28, against coach Mike Kafka’s New York Giants in the former’s home pitch, the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada. The reasoning as to why it is a tremendously important matchup is because it may very well determine who will hold the No. 1 overall pick come the 2026 NFL Draft.

The reason behind the speculations on Jeanty’s availability in his team’s penultimate game of this year’s regular season stems from the fact that there were rumblings heading into the matchup that the Raiders franchise were contemplating on having him rest and sit out the game. This is because this may boost the team’s chances towards losing the game and bolster their chances for the first overall selection next year in their tanking efforts.
Both Las Vegas and the Giants possess similar 2-13 overall records as the 2025 campaign nears its postseason play. For the Raiders, they are currently on the heels of an abysmal nine-game losing streak, with their most recent defeat coming on Sunday, Dec. 21, in a two-point loss, 23-21, at the hands of the Houston Texans. For Jeanty, he is currently uncorking his first year in the league with the Raiders, as he was drafted with the sixth pick in this year’s draft.

As the Las Vegas Raiders faithful hold their breath to see one of their standouts in Ashton Jeanty to be suiting for their next game, one of their other players will unfortunately go on a season-ending surgery. It was also reported on the same day that Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby is slated to miss the last two games of the year due to him opting to undergo knee surgery.
