The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2025 season with high hopes after Brock Purdy signed a five-year, $265 million extension. However, the quarterback suffered a turf-toe variant and an accompanying shoulder issue which sidelined him for an extended period. In Purdy’s absence, Mac Jones stepped up massively.
What was thought to be a temporary replacement is now being discussed as a permanent option as Jones has gone 5-2 in his seven starts so far. During this time, he has thrown 1,832 yards, 10 touchdowns and five interceptions, while completing passes at about 67.2%. Following his recent Week 9 win over the New York Giants, he went 19-of-24 for 235 yards, 2 TDs and posted a 135.2 passer rating.
After this performance, NFL analyst Dan Orlovsky thinks there is a quarterback controversy brewing in the 49ers.
“Yeah, there is a brewing quarterback controversy, competition, whatever you want, in San Francisco,” Orlovsky said on ESPN NFL. “Rob Ferdie, really good player. Mac Jones has been absolutely sensational in his time, doing it with guys who’ve been beat up — stars and perimeter players who haven’t been healthy. He’s been knocked around, yet this team, somehow, even with all those injuries, is still in the playoff race. And it’s because of the quarterback play. There’s a quarterback controversy brewing in San Francisco.”

49ers HC Makes Feelings Clear Between Brock Purdy And Mac Jones
Recently, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked if Mac Jones’ surge will affect Brock Purdy’s position in the team when he will return. Shanahan made it clear who is QB1 if both QBs are healthy. He said:
“They’re not related,” Jones said, via 49ersWebzone.com. “This is Brock’s team and if Brock’s good to go and everything and can play like Brock, there’s no decision to be made. It’s just nice as we go through this with Brock with the uncertainty of the toe, it is cool to have someone playing as good as Mac is. But, they’re not related.”
This shuts the door on any rumors surrounding Mac Jones beating Purdy in the depth chart. The 49ers have invested massively in Purdy, who took them to Super Bowl two seasons ago. As such, they are not ready to move on from him just now.
