The college football season is inching toward the end. The NFL Draft declaration window is also approaching. Many college football stars, such as Arch Manning, are eligible to declare for the draft and join the big league.
The Texas Longhorns had a turbulent season, full of ups and downs, and were ranked 13th when the committee was about to declare the 12-team playoff routine. Ideally, Manning should run it back with the Longhorns one more time.
However, as per Kirk Herbstreit and Joey Galloway, if someone has to stick around for one more season, it’s John Mateer. The Oklahoma Sooners were eliminated after losing 24-34 against the Alabama Crimson Tide.
Individually, Mateer had a subpar season, despite his dual-threat abilities. He ended the season with 2,885 passing yards, 14 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. He also had 149 carries across 431 yards and eight touchdowns.
The two insiders believe that Mateer has a lot of untapped potential and some “unfinished business” that can only be realized if he stays with the Sooners.
“That would be my guess and my suggestion (would be) that OU is a good place to go back to,” Galloway SAID. “I think that he needs to get healthy. I hope he gets back to the John Mateer we’ve seen early on the season for Oklahoma, but I would imagine he’s going to be back.”
Herbstreit said that he understands money can be a huge factor, especially considering the transfer portal is about to open in almost a week. However, if Mateer is going to exercise his last year of eligibility, he should do so with the Sooners, as per Herbstreit.

John Mateer is Weighing All Options
Early in the season, Mateer was getting Heisman hype for his consistency and productivity. Then he had to undergo hand surgery, and while recovering from the same, he missed a lot of game time, which damaged his positioning.
After he returned to the field, Mateer wasn’t performing at the same level. That could be a reason why many believe that he still hasn’t reached his ceiling in college football.
The quarterback, following the loss against Alabama, stated that he hasn’t thought about his future yet. He is still trying to take a good look at all his options.
“I really haven’t thought about it yet,” the quarterback said. “I’m pretty sure I’ll take some time and weigh all the options, and we’ll see.”
The NCAA transfer portal will open on January 2nd, and the NFL Draft declaration window will open on January 6th.
