New York Eyes Ole Miss QB Jaxson Dart as Ideal Fit in Late First-Round Draft Move

We are just one day away from the NFL Draft, which will decide players’ futures and determine the direction of all 32 NFL franchises.

One of the most talked-about teams is the New York Giants. Initially hotly rumored to be going after Shedeur Sanders at the third overall pick, now reports suggest they are looking at defensive edge Abdul Carter from Penn State or potentially trading down in the draft.

The Athletic’s Diana Russini revealed that the Giants were the most aggressive team trying to trade up to get the No. 1 overall pick from the Tennessee Titans. Right now they still sit at three, but they also may pivot later in the round or trade into the first by moving other draft capital.

The Giants’ quarterback position still needs to be solved, and reports are now gaining steam that they may move back into the first round to get Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss. Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston were both signed this offseason to provide experience, but Tommy DeVito also re-signed, raising questions over what the plan is behind center.

Dart has really shot up a lot of mock drafts, going from a round three or four selection to many now believing he will go in the first round. He had a strong 2024 season for the Rebels, throwing for 4279 yards, 29 touchdowns, and six interceptions with a quarterback rating of 180.7.

It is one of the weaker draft classes at the quarterback position, but there has been real traction regarding Dart and Jalen Milroe potentially being first-round picks. Cam Ward is comfortably the top quarterback in the class, and Sanders is the consensus second-best quarterback, but there are questions over who is his best suitor.

If the Giants did take Dart, the likelihood is he would sit behind Wilson or Winston for year one and learn the ropes. We have seen the Kansas City Chiefs and Green Bay Packers do this with Patrick Mahomes and Jordan Love, drafting them in the first round and sitting them for a year or two instead of throwing them into the limelight from the start.

However, for the Giants, does Wilson or Winston start? Would Dart become the third-strong quarterback? It is an incredibly bold move to make following their free agency signings, and it would suit Dart more to sit this first year.

No trades have been made yet, but anything can happen between now and Thursday night. New York may take Carter at No. 3 and then pick up a quarterback in the first, or they may move away from the third pick. No franchise is as familiar with unusual moves as the New York Giants.
