According to a report from ESPN’s Heather Dinich, FBS leaders agreed to a 10-day transfer portal window in January instead of the current portal format.
This window would ensure that every team gets the same amount of time to recruit from the portal, something that FBS coaches are dying to have.
The New Transfer Portal Window Proposal
The way the transfer portal is currently set up means that the teams playing in the college football postseason do not have the same amount of time and ability to recruit from the transfer portal.
The current winter window opens on Dec. 9 and runs until Dec. 28 (although this isn’t a hard cutoff). So, teams that play in December are left behind in portal recruiting.
Coaches have been adamant and outspoken about their frustrations with the current system.
One anonymous Power Four coach told Dinich, “If the transfer window doesn’t get reset, coaches are going to be fed up and may start bailing.” So, in other words, every single college coach views this proposal as a good thing.
But there isn’t a guarantee that the NCAA approves this.
Why Would the NCAA Decline This Proposal
The reason that the portal is set up this way is the academic calendar.
The current window allows players to enter the portal at the end of one semester, and by the time they find a new home, they haven’t already started a new semester of school.
If the portal were to be in January (after the national championship), players who decide to enter it and wind up at new schools would have already missed potentially up to two weeks of classes.
While coaches may not see this as a problem, the NCAA is a student-athlete organization that could view this as harmful to players’ education.

If this proposal were to be approved, it would go into effect during the 2025-2026 academic year.
