Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs have snapped Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder’s 16-game winning streak. OKC were flying high in the NBA with their 24-1 record until they met the Spurs in the NBA Cup semifinals.
Shai led Thunder with 29 points, while Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams both ended up with 17 points and seven rebounds each. Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein also got into double figures. However, this was not enough against an inspired Spurs team.
Wemby had been out injured for a few games, and he marked his comeback with a bang. In just 21 minutes, Victor Wembanyama recorded 22 points and nine rebounds. The San Antonio Spurs had three more players with over 20 points in the game – Devin Vassell, Stephon Castle, and De’Aaron Fox – with 23, 22, and 22 points, respectively.
After the win and qualification to the finals, Victor Wembanyama spoke about how proud he is to be with this unit of players and appreciated the “pure and ethical” brand of the Spurs’ basketball. This seemingly felt like an attack on Shai and the OKC. JR Smith recently reacted to this, saying:
“I think it’s the first time we have ever seen somebody win doing that. Like we have seen James doing it for a while but it gets to a certain point and he just couldn’t get it done. He’s seen like certain dudes how to play the foul game and I think this is just the first style that we’ve seen it be successful.”
“But not only that, they got some dogs over there in OKC. They got some dudes that can really hoop. I’m watching the game, I’m sitting here looking like I didn’t know who this dude is, but I’m like, “Damn, he tough.” I ain’t gonna lie OKC is tough dawg,” he concluded.

A reporter asked Wemby if he missed his team for the last 12 games.
“It’s just incredible cuz I’ve seen these guys for the last 12 games just get better, do some beautiful things. And I just wanted to be a part of it, you know, and I’m glad that we can still do it when I’m here. I have no doubt, of course, but it’s I’m just glad to be a part of something that’s growing to be so beautiful and so pure and ethical basketball, you know,” Wemby said in reference to Spurs’ game in comparison with OKC.
