NBA Trade Rumors: Sacramento Kings Could Part Ways With $186,016,000 Star One Year After Supermax Extension

The Sacramento Kings may be facing a franchise-defining decision. Domantas Sabonis, the core of their offense and the centerpiece of their rebuild, is back in the trade spotlight only a year after signing a massive supermax extension worth more than $186 million.

The Kings committed to him long-term with a deal designed to anchor their competitive window, but league chatter suggests his future in Sacramento is no longer guaranteed. Reports around the league indicate that several front offices have contacted the Kings to express interest in the All-Star big man.

According to Sam Amick, at least a few teams have made it known that they would welcome the chance to engage in discussions about a potential Sabonis deal. This has sparked renewed debate about whether Sacramento is quietly evaluating alternatives despite its public stance of building around him.

“As it relates to Sabonis, my understanding is there are at least a few teams that have raised their hand to say, ‘Yeah, he’s somebody we’d want to talk about,’” Amick reported.

Sacramento’s current situation adds fuel to the speculation. The team has been inconsistent, and the front office is under pressure to take a leap rather than remain in the Play-In range. This season’s terrible start has only added to that pressure.

The Kings are 13th in the Western Conference with just three wins and nine losses. They are also on a four-game losing streak. Sabonis, averaging a double-double with 15.3 points and 12.3 rebounds, has done very little for the franchise.

Earlier this year, the Kings traded De’Aaron Fox, who was also once believed to be a part of their long-term planning. If the Kings believe their ceiling with this core has plateaued, Sabonis becomes the most valuable trade asset they can use to reshape the roster

    Is Domantas Sabonis Playing Tonight?

Sabonis enters tonight’s matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves with uncertainty surrounding his status. He has been dealing with a rib injury that has lingered over the past week. As per the official injury report, he is listed as ‘Questionable’ due to a contusion in the left ribcage.

If he sits, Sacramento loses its primary interior presence and offensive facilitator. The Kings would need to rely more heavily on the veteran presence of DeMar DeRozan and Russell Westbrook.

Backup bigs would be asked to absorb larger defensive and rebounding duties, which is a major challenge against Minnesota’s dominant frontcourt.

The Kings have struggled this season so far. Most of their losses have been blowouts, losing by 30 points or more against the Hawks and the Thunder in recent outings.
