NBA Trade Rumors: Mavericks Eyeing to Pair Cooper Flagg With $22.5M Former Lottery Pick

According to a report by NBC Sports Bay Area, the Dallas Mavericks have shown interest in pairing Cooper Flagg with Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Kuminga. Apart from Dallas, the Chicago Bulls, Sacramento Kings and Washington Wizards have also shown interest in the former lottery pick.

It was previously reported that the Mavericks had initiated contact with the Warriors over the possibility of a trade surrounding Anthony Davis. But Golden State would have to give up more than just Kuminga for such a trade since his $22.5 million per season salary can’t match the All-NBA forward, who is making $54.1 million.

To make this deal work, the Warriors would likely need to include either Draymond Green or Jimmy Butler. Green makes $25.8 million, while Butler makes $54.1 million. However, the Dubs are not keen on parting ways with either player.

Kuminga is a two-way forward with explosiveness and range, who can also create his own shot when needed. If the Mavericks can land him, the team would boast two solid pieces for the future in Flagg and the Warriors forward.

Why would the Mavericks be a favorable destination for Jonathan Kuminga?

While Cooper Flagg is seen as a future superstar, Kuminga’s ceiling is also pretty high. He played some of the best basketball of his young career during the 2023-24 season, averaging 16.1 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.2 assists, shooting 52.9%.

Since Butler’s arrival last season, Kuminga has gradually lost his place in Steve Kerr’s rotation. Meanwhile, in Dallas, Kuminga is likely to get ample playing time and could grow into a key player on a relatively young roster. It will also take some pressure off him to go from a dynasty to a team looking to reach the playoffs again.

The Mavericks keep saying they wish to compete and win now, but a move for Kuminga will be more of a bet for the future. Regardless, it should prove to be a positive change of scenery for the forward. Kuminga will be eligible to be traded after Jan. 15.

He has not played for the Warriors since Dec. 18 and as things stand, it wouldn’t be surprising if he doesn’t suit up for the Dubs again.
