As Bronny James struggles to cement his spot in the best professional basketball league in the world, his father, LeBron James, continues to be his biggest cheerleader. This was on display Saturday as well when Bronny suited up for a G-League game.
The South Bay Lakers played their first game of the new year on Saturday and faced off against the Memphis Hustle. With two minutes left in the second period, the second-year pro had a highlight play when he got the ball in the defensive end and dribbled all the way to dunk the basketball and tie the game at 60 each.
While LeBron wasn’t there in person at the UCLA Health Training Center in El Segundo, he was clearly staying updated and re-quoted a video of the play on X. He captioned the post:

The South Bay Lakers got a hard-fought 125-121 win in overtime. They were led by Kobe Bufkin and Drew Timme’s 26 points each, while Bronny ended the night with 20 points. While Bronny James’ stats have taken a hit in his second season in the G-League, he put up a season-high against Memphis.
Bronny shot 8 of 11, along with seven assists, five rebounds and three steals. He averages 9.5 points per game across six matchups this season. This is a clear drop from the 13.4 points average from the past season.
How Has LeBron James’ Son Bronny James Fared in NBA This Season?
Bronny James’ drop in production isn’t just limited to the G-League. While his minutes have increased in the NBA, his averages have mostly dropped from the past season. In 8.2 minutes per game, he averages just 1.6 points.
He didn’t feature in the LA Lakers’ 128-121 win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday and last played against the Detroit Pistons on Dec. 30. He went scoreless in the game. In fact, he scored in just three of the past 11 games where he logged minutes.
These are clearly not great signs for Bronny’s offensive career, but as JJ Redick made it clear in 2024 after drafting him, the Lakers aren’t looking for him to be an offensive threat. They see him as a work in progress who makes some crucial plays on the defensive end.
