The LA Lakers have won just two of their last six outings, and head coach JJ Redick is far from pleased with his team’s performance as of late. In particular, Redick is not satisfied with the Lakers’ execution of their set plays.
Speaking at a recent media availability, Redick called out his squad on this particular flaw but admitted that this particular time of year isn’t conducive to sharpness on the hardcourt.
I don’t know what else to Do. I chalk it up to the holidays.
When one reporter asked if the Lakers were “forgetting plays” during game time, Redick sounded annoyed as he considered that possibility.
I don’t know. I wasn’t a guy that forgot plays.
JJ Redick said he has been perplexed by the Lakers’ lack of organization on offense, with plays he is calling either not being run, or being run wrong. “I don’t know what else to do. … It’s just like, that’s happening so consistently right now. I chalk it up to the holidays.” pic.twitter.com/yKowEdE6C0

If there’s any coach who would expect his players to be perfectly accurate with their sets, it’s JJ Redick, who ran intricate plays to find open threes during his 15-year NBA career. Prior to this, the 6-foot-4 sniper honed his craft at Duke under the tutelage of multi-titled coach Mike Krzyzewski.
This isn’t the first time in recent weeks that Redick publicly called out his team. After a 119-96 nationally televised loss on Christmas Day to the Houston Rockets, a frustrated Redick said that the Lakers “don’t care enough to do the things that are necessary.”
Though the purple and gold squad has since picked up a win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Friday, glaring flaws on the offensive end continue to show up on the stat sheet. That night, the Lakers committed 20 turnovers (five more than their opponents) and shot just 34.4% from beyond the arc.
As 2026 dawns, JJ Redick is hoping that the Lakers can turn over a new leaf and execute better on both ends of the floor.
“I Think He’s Frustrated”: JJ Redick Comments on Deandre Ayton’s Performance as of Late
In the same media availability over the weekend, JJ Redick also commented on Deandre Ayton, who is still trying to find his way around in his first season with the Lakers.
I think he’s frustrated. He doesn’t feel like he’s getting the ball.
Against the Grizzlies on Friday, the Bahamian center scored just four points on 2-for-4 shooting from the field. Ayton was the only starter to not log double-digit scoring that night, and he’ll have his chance to prove himself once again when the Lakers have their rematch against the Grizzlies on Sunday.
