Jayson Tatum Injury Update: GM Brad Stevens Provides Details For Important Celtics Decision

Jayson Tatum was ruled out of the remainder of the season on May 12, 2025 during Celtics’ Conference Semifinal game vs New York Knicks. Tatum played 40 minutes and 42 points with 8 rebounds and 4 assists. Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles tear which put his next season in peril as well.

There was very little hope to see Jayson back in action after the painful injury. However, Tatum’s progress surprised everyone. After just four months, Tatum was back on the court doing individual workouts. Two months later, Tatum has started his workouts with the ball.

A clip of Tatum hitting a three with ease went viral as people were excited to see his road to recovery. It filled fans with some optimism. Now Celtics general manager Brad Stevens has provided an important update around his return.

“We are not putting a timeline on it as we haven’t the whole time. One of the things that everybody can see is we didn’t apply for a DPE this year, which was a conscious decision for a lot of reasons. But the reality is he is not going to be back until he is 110% healthy and he feels good about it. And that’s a big part of it, right?” Stevens said.

“Obviously he is itching to play. Obviously he hates watching, but he is also very cognizant of the need to meet every threshold and why there are those things that are put in place. We have had a lot of great talks about it and one of the things that we love about this whole group but I think the the guys that have been here the longest lead the charge as they love to play,” he added.

    Requirements For Jayson Tatum’s Return

Brad Stevens shared how there are some strength thresholds that Tatum has to meet. He told that there will be several weeks of progressions. These progressions will include scripted workouts against small groups, against bigger groups, in five on five, unscripted, random. He has to go all the way up through those.

It’s a long progression for Tatum from here, as per Stevens. Apart from these thresholds of a progression of play, he will also need time and effort for his reconditioning. Stevens shared positive update that Tatum has made great strides and Celtics are focused on the full strength game.
