Is LeBron James Playing Tonight Against Spurs? Closer Look at Lakers Star’s Status (Jan. 7)

The LA Lakers take on the San Antonio Spurs on the second night of a back-to-back on Wednesday, without LeBron James. He was earlier listed as questionable, citing right sciatica and left foot arthritis.

The 41-year-old began his season on Nov. 18 after missing the first few weeks due to sciatica. Since then, James has missed time due to foot and back injury management.

As a result, James has yet to play in back-to-backs this season. The Lakers are being cautious with his health as he’s in his 23rd season and would prefer to have him close to full strength before the playoffs. James also has his long-term plans carefully thought out.

After beating the Pelicans on Tuesday, in which he scored 30 points, eight rebounds and eight assists in 33 minutes, James admitted that every back-to-back will be “TBD” for at this stage of his career.

“I’m 41-years-old … every back-to-back for the rest of the season is TBD,” James told reporters. “I’m 41, I got the most minutes in NBA history, bank it right now.”

The game is also against one of the youngest and most physical teams in the NBA. The Spurs have lost their last two consecutive games to the Blazers and Grizzlies and would be eager to win against LA. While they are also playing a back-to-back, it’s an ideal call by the Lakers to rest LeBron James.

    LeBron James stats vs. Spurs

LeBron James has averaged 26.9 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.9 assists in 47 games against the Spurs. He has shot 50.3% from the field and 36.9% from 3-point range. James has a 25-22 record in these games. One of the losses came this season when LA faced off against the Spurs on Dec. 10 in the NBA Cup quarterfinals.

Despite James tallying 19 points, 15 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks on 50.0% field goal shooting, the Lakers lost 132-119.
