The league has been buzzing after this week’s viral interview between Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo and The Athletic’s Sam Amick. In here, Giannis seemingly reaffirmed his commitment to the franchise. Using a relatable analogy involving his marriage, Antetokounmpo explained,
“As of today. You know how they say this thing about your significant other, or your wife, you always have to say, ‘As of today.”
While the message intended was to show how he is a million per cent invested in the Bucks’ current roster, the specific phrasing has only fueled the speculation even further.
NBA insiders were quick to dissect the semantics of Antetokounmpo’s message, with Zach Lowe highlighting that the loyalty on display comes with significant fine print.
Analyzing the situation on a recent episode of his podcast, Lowe highlighted how Giannis’ affirmation might also have been a blinking light for front offices. Lowe spoke of the “caveats” and undertones that Antetokounmpo’s words carried.
“Not signing an extention is not the same thing as requesting a trade,” Lowe said.
Lowe suggests that such qualifiers are rarely accidental in the modern league landscape. He explained that while Giannis is a class act who has earned the benefit of the doubt, the reality of a 16-21 record and an 11th-place standing in the East means that “today” can very quickly become “yesterday.”
The timing of the message adds another layer of intrigue as the 5 February trade deadline approaches. Though Giannis insists that asking for a trade is “not my nature,” his comments highlight some sort of “caveat” that leaves a clear “out” for both Giannis and the Bucks.
Is The Bucks On The Verge of Losing Giannis Antetokounmpo?
The clock is ticking for the Bucks as their roster continues to hover near the bottom of the Eastern Conference. The high-stakes pairing of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard clearly didn’t work out, lacking the defensive identity and late-game synergy for a deep playoff run. With a ballooning luxury tax bill and depleted chest of future draft picks, the front office has no room for error.
While Antetokounmpo has a championship ring and a deep connection to the city, his competitive drive is currently colliding with a roster that looks increasingly stagnant. If the Bucks cannot claw their way back into the league’s elite tier, the prospect of a franchise-altering trade request moves from a media talking point to an inevitable reality.
