LeBron James had often expressed his desire to extend his glorious career so that he could share the court with his son, Bronny. In October 2024, LeBron and Bronny made history, becoming the first father-son duo to play together in an NBA game.
James has entered his 23rd season and now holds the record for the longest NBA career after surpassing Vince Carter’s 22 years in the league. James is now over 40 years of age, and after such a long career, he has the chance to set a record that may never be broken.
LeBron once had his eyes set on continuing to play till both his sons, Bronny and Bryce, are in the league. However, a couple of months ago, LeBron confirmed that he would not hold off retirement to play with Bryce. And now, news out of Arizona makes the possibility of Bryce and LeBron sharing the court even more unlikely.
“Redshirting is on the table. No final decisions have been made. But it’s tough, puts you in a tough situation. You play Bryce in a game for just three minutes, it burns a year of eligibility,” Arizona head coach Tommy Lloyd shared.
“I wish it was easier, I wish there was a set number of games you could play like they have in football. I think that would make a lot of sense for some of these kids. But we don’t so I can only operate with the rules that we currently have,” he explained.
“Because I want Bryce to have the best basketball career, the most options in his college basketball career, long term. You know, whatever that looks like. I just feel like throwing the kid with a lot of potential, that’s developing. Some garbage minutes, it might feel better now, but potentially down the line it could be something you regret,” Lloyd concluded.

Arizona HC’s reality check for Bryce means that we might not see Bryce declaring for the NBA Draft for another two years. This makes it much less likely for LeBron to share the court with both his sons.
Fans React to Bryce’s Redshirt Possibility
Most fans agreed with the Arizona HC’s judgment. However, a few did question Bryce’s decision to commit.
“Great coach! I understand why he chose that school,” one fan said.
“He should have gone to weaker school so he could actually play. You get better playing games, not in practice. Next year Arizona will bring in even more talented freshman,” one fan voiced a different opinion.
“First kid to get drafted as a red shirt,” one fan joked.
“Pretty much guaranteed at least draft considerations because of lineage BUT keeping him there and letting him develop at the collegiate level is the best route,” another fan said.
“Great choice he should red shirt,” another commented.
“Thats a good coach right there .. he doing what’s best for Bryce if we being honest! It’s a lot of good basketball players coming out,” another replied.
