The Montana State Bobcats have finally won an FCS national title after beating the Illinois State in a one-point thriller, 35-34. It came down to the wire, but the Bobcats came out on top. This celebration was short-lived, however, as several players soon announced that they were entering the transfer portal.
Brent Vigen has so far not recruited to recoup his transfer portal losses, but his losses are minimal so far, though more are expected to announce that they will be entering. So far, only four players are leaving who are either redshirt sophomores, redshirt freshmen, or true sophomores who have not played that much with the team and are looking for a new school where they could have better playing opportunities.

Montana State Football Transfer Portal: Outgoing Players
- OT Cedric Jefferson
- CB Carson Williams
- CB Seth Johnson
- CB Kyon Loud
All three transferees were ranked as three-star players by On3. Of the four of them, redshirt freshman cornerback Carson Williams is so far the only one who may be finding a new team after winning that FCS national title, with Missouri and Utah battling it out for him. The other three do not have any clear suitors so far.
FCS Title Win Was Montana State’s First One In Over 4 Decades
As for Montana State, the Bobcats have been experiencing a very long title drought, with head coach Brent Vigen having come close to getting to the championship multiple times, only to lose over and over again. This time, however, was his time, and for the first time in 41 years, the Montana State Bobcats are the FCS national champions.
Illinois State did not go down without a fight, however, as the Redbirds forced the game into overtime, with wide receiver Taco Dowler being the most impressive player of the game, getting eight receptions for 111 yards and this includes the game-winning touchdown during overtime.
This was a team that fell to Oregon 59-13 during their season opener back in Aug. 30, with many not looking optimistically at the team’s odds after such a one-sided beating from the Ducks. However, Vigen and his crew have proven their resilience, losing only one more time before going on one of the program’s strongest runs at the FCS level.
