Mike Elko Extension: All We Know About Texas A&M HC’s New Contract Amid Coaching Rumors

Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is in his second season with the Aggies and has led them to one of their best seasons in recent history. After going 8-5 last year, the Aggies are undefeated through nine games and are the No. 3-ranked team in the nation. They look like contenders to win the national championship and are favorites to win the SEC championship.

As a result, it was not a surprise when it was reported on Saturday that Elko and Texas A&M are finalizing a contract extension that would make him one of the 10 highest-paid coaches in college football.

“Will be a new 6-year deal for Mike Elko,” Pete Nakos wrote.

On his current deal, Elko is making $7 million annually. However, according to Pete Thamel, who spoke about it on College GameDay today, Elko is expected to make north of $11 million per season on his extension.

Elko has reshaped the Aggies into a physical team that has a similar defensive identity to his previous tenure at Duke. He has also improved recruiting at the program, making it one of the most attractive schools in the nation.

Mike Elko Will Look to Deliver an Undefeated Regular Season for Texas A&M

While Mike Elko is certainly excited to sign a new contract extension, his focus is on helping the Texas A&M Aggies have the best season possible. The Aggies are scheduled to face South Carolina on Saturday at Noon ET. It is the team’s third-to-last game of the season, and is a game the Aggies are heavily favored to win.

If they win on Saturday, they will only have two more games to win to ensure an undefeated regular season. Next week against Samford should be an easy win for them, and then they will have one final test against No. 10-ranked Texas in the last week of the season.

The Aggies sit at the top of the SEC standings as one of only two teams that have an undefeated conference record in the SEC, alongside Alabama. However, Texas A&M has the tiebreaker because Alabama lost a non-conference game to Florida State in its season opener.
