Former Michigan Wolverines starting quarterback Tom Brady became the most accomplished player in NFL history, winning seven Super Bowls. He also holds the record for most passing yards in the big game, but does his record have a chance to be passed by a former Texas Tech Red Raider?

Wolverines Legend Tom Brady Holds Many Super Bowl Records But Could Be Passed in the Future
Brady started every game for the Wolverines in the 1998 and 1999 seasons, throwing 30 touchdowns and 16 interceptions. There was hardly any draft buzz surrounding the skinny kid from California.
The New England Patriots selected Brady with the 199th overall pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, taking a flier on the Wolverines passer.
To say he blew expectations out of the water would be an understatement. To put it simply, across 23 seasons in the NFL, Brady became the most decorated and arguably greatest player in league history. He won a record seven Super Bowls — six for the Patriots and one for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
He was named the game’s MVP a record five times and appeared in 10 Super Bowls, another NFL record.
Across those 10 games, the former Wolverines quarterback amassed 3,039 passing yards — the most total passing yards in the game’s history.
While it seemed like that record would hold forever — similar to Wilt’s 100-point game, Bill Russell’s 11 NBA championships, and Rickey Henderson’s 1,406 stolen bases — it may be in jeopardy in the future.
The candidate to pass him? Former Texas Tech QB Patrick Mahomes, who is already set to start in his fifth Super Bowl in his eighth season in the league.
Across his first four games, the former Red Raider has totaled 1,071 passing yards — a far cry from the Super Bowl passing record of over 3,000 yards held by Brady.
Mahomes, however, is only 29-years-old. With a good performance in Super Bowl 59 against the Philadelphia Eagles, he’ll be nearing 1,500 passing yards. The Chiefs are vying for a three-peat, having dominated the league over the past few seasons.
They’ve shown little sign of decline in terms of offensive weapons. They’ll have third-year receiver Rashee Rice back next season. Rookie receiver Xavier Worthy has gotten significantly better as the season’s gone along and looks like a valuable piece moving forward.
Mahomes’s top target, tight end Travis Kelce, is nearing the end — but with head coach Andy Reid at the helm and with the talent of Mahomes, it shouldn’t be too much of a problem once Kelce is done playing.
If Mahomes continues to reach the big game at a rate of five appearances in eight seasons, he’ll surely have a shot at unseating Brady as the all-time Super Bowl passing leader.
But that’s assuming a lot.

Brady also had games of 505 and 466 passing yards in the Super Bowl, something Mahomes hasn’t yet done. He may have to if he’s going to reach the record.
For now, and most likely the rest of the decade, Brady will continue holding on to the Super Bowl passing record. But with continued appearances in the title game, Mahomes will be right on his heels.
