‘Spoken Up When I Believed Something Was Not Right’ — Alan Haller Breaks Silence After MSU Exit

Michigan State made headlines this week after announcing the departure of Haller, the school’s Athletic Director, who served in the role for four years. On Friday, May 2, following his removal, Haller shared an emotional statement with the Spartan community, reflecting on his 32-year journey at MSU.

In his message, Haller expressed gratitude for the support he received from students, alumni, colleagues, and donors but also hinted at internal conflicts that may have played a role in his exit.

“Throughout my career, I have consistently spoken up when I believed something was not right — always guided by a commitment to protect students and uphold the best interests of the university. At times, those decisions have not aligned with individuals in positions of significant influence,” Haller said in his statement.

While the university did not give a clear reason for his departure, sources suggest that his struggles with fundraising for NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) deals may have affected recruiting in football and men’s basketball, leading to criticism of his leadership.

Meanwhile, Michigan State President Kevin Guskiewicz said the university is now searching for a new athletic director who can navigate the ongoing NCAA changes, including the House v. NCAA settlement, which impacts roster limits and revenue sharing.

Despite the disappointment of leaving MSU, Haller didn’t forget to mention his achievements with the program and celebrate them. He ended his statement with a heartfelt remark.

“Serving this university and this community has been, for me, an act of love. I remain a proud Spartan. Goodbye Michigan State,” Haller said.
