“College Football Is So Soft Now”: Michigan Fans Fume as Jaishawn Barham Loses TD and Gets Ejected for Targeting

The Michigan Wolverines are opening their season against the New Mexico Lobos. So far, they seem to have the game well in hand with a 27-17 lead going into the fourth quarter. So far, nothing surprising, with a Power Four school easily winning a game against a lesser opponent.

But what drew the attention of the fans in this game was a play by linebacker Jaishawn Barham, which initially was recorded as a fumble by the Lobos’ quarterback Jack Layne. However, afterwards, the call was overturned by the officials, who ended up ejecting Barham for targeting.

Fans reacted to the call, with some thinking that the game had gone soft.

“College football is so soft now. Jaishawn Barham puts a good hit on the QB and instead of a sack it’s an automatic first down and he’s out for the first half against Oklahoma. Sponsored by Charmin.” Complained one fan

“If that’s targeting then how are you supposed to tackle a QB? Just pay him down gently? It’s FOOTBALL” Wondered someone

“Might as well play flag football” Proposed someone

“This is such a bad call by the refs. They are the same height and he wraps him up so heads are at the same level. Refs then blow the missed incomplete pass later in the same drive” Complained yet another person

Others did agree with the decision.

“Forcible contact to head or neck area is the rule, correct? Contact looks high, so by definition, that is targeting.” Said someone else

“A Michigan player is dirty surprise surprise” Joked another fan

Others thought that a middle ground could’ve been reached.

“That’s a terrible call! Yes it’s roughing the passer but no way is that targeting. Did not launch or lead with the head. Terrible” Explained one fan
