Sherrone Moore, who was promoted as Michigan’s 21st head coach after Jim Harbaugh left the program two years ago, was fired on Dec. 10 after the program discovered that he had an inappropriate relationship with a staffer.
Michigan’s athletic department has a strict policy about prohibiting romantic relationships with subordinates without disclosure. Moore didn’t speak about his relationship and thus faced the consequences.
“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” athletic director Warde Manuel said.
Since Moore was fired “for cause,” Michigan saved millions, which they otherwise would have lost because of Moore’s buyout contract.

Sherrone Moore Faced Legal Troubles In The Aftermath Of Michigan Firing
After being dismissed from the program, Sherrone Moore was brought up on charges by the authorities for allegedly invading the house and stalking the victim, the Michigan staffer with whom he had a relationship, without consent. This happened just hours after the firing.
As per the court filings, Moore entered the victim’s home, grabbed kitchen knives and threatened to inflict self-harm. A 911 call was being made, but by the time authorities arrived, Moore had already left. However, he was eventually located and taken into custody.
Moore was arraigned in the court earlier this month, where he entered a not-guilty plea and was released on bail with conditions, including no contact with the alleged victim and mandated mental health treatment. His next date is scheduled for January.
Moore led the Wolverines to a 9-3 record in 2025 and had compiled a 17-8 mark overall in his two seasons in charge. His time in Ann Arbor has been filled with controversy, including the NCAA sign-stealing investigation earlier in 2025, which resulted in self-imposed suspensions.
After Moore’s firing, the university made Biff Poggi the interim head coach. He led the program in the Citrus Bowl game against the Texas Longhorns on December 31. Meanwhile, the program just recently hired Kyle Whittingham as its newest head coach. Whittingham was Utah’s head coach for 21 seasons.
Whittingham will now have to do everything he can to talk to recruits who felt betrayed by Moore’s actions. With the transfer portal nearing, Michigan might not want to lose a lot of players with a change in guard in the head coaching role.
