Despite being a freshman, Michigan’s five-star recruit Bryce Underwood is showing a lot of poise under center and he proved it in the game against Central Michigan. The Wolverines defeated their in-state rivals 63-3 on the back of Underwood’s three touchdown performance.
Coming off a loss against Oklahoma State in Week 2, Underwood was much better in Week 3, going 16-25 for 235 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He also rushed for 114 yards on nine carries for two scores.
After the game, interim head coach Biff Poggi, who is serving in Sherrone Moore’s absence, shared a “Batman” reference for the quarterback.
“He might actually be Batman,” Poggi said jokingly. “We need to do a DNA test on him because he could be Batman.”

Michigan really used Bryce Underwood’s freshman legs to good use in this game. Underwood himself will be happy with such a dominant win. The freshman has been critical of himself. In the season-opening win against New Mexico, he gave himself a “C+” despite putting up a strong statline of 21/31 passing, 251 yards, a touchdown.

Bryce Underwood Admits He Changed Approach For Central Michigan Game
Michigan’s true freshman quarterback was graded among the lowest by Pro Football Focus in their 24-13 loss against Oklahoma. Bryce Underwood completed 9 of 24 passes for 142 yards, with no touchdowns and no interceptions. He also had a rough time on the ground, losing a yard on three rushing attempts in that game.
Underwood saw his film and made a change in his playstyle. He decided to be mobile after struggling to perform under pressure from Oklahoma’s defensive line.
“I just realized how much of a difference I can make if I use my legs,” he told the media.
Underwood drew praise from first-year Central Michigan coach Matt Drinkall as well. Drinkall said:
“The cool thing about watching him in person is he’s not just a talented thrower. He’s a very, very, very good quarterback as far as how he operates the whole system. You can tell he’s as smart as he is talented and he’s incredibly talented.”
Bryce Underwood will now have to translate this performance in more important games like the one coming up this week against Nebraska. After this, they will return home for the matchup against Wisconsin and then on the road vs No. 25 USC.
