Michael Vick’s arrival at Norfolk State has sparked a fire that feels very familiar. It is like the same kind of energy Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, brought to Jackson State years ago. Legends-turned-coaches lean on charisma, community ties, and a no-nonsense approach to reshaping their programs.

Michael Vick’s Homecoming Seemingly Mirroring Deion Sanders’ Jackson State Tenure
In December 2024, Norfolk State announced Vick as head coach after a lackluster 4-8 season. The decision wasn’t simple. Vick weighed a tempting offer from Sacramento State, which featured a massive NIL program targeting $50 million and recent FCS playoff runs. Yet, he chose home.
“I’ve got family that I considered, I care about, and I love,” Vick said, “This allows me to serve young men in my community.” Sacramento’s cash wasn’t able to sway him.
He prioritized his impact on his hometown over dollars, which is rare in today’s NIL-driven college football scene. “I felt like it was great to go back home and do it in my backyard,” he added.
Vick’s philosophy aligns with Sanders’s at Jackson State: build from within, lean on roots, and inspire. Like Sanders, he’s embracing the transfer portal era with heart rather than profit. He knows players might chase bigger NIL deals elsewhere. “I’m taking the embrace its approach,” he explained.
If a MEAC star gets a Clemson offer, Vick won’t block it. He’s pushing Norfolk State to compete in the NIL game instead, spotlighting their Gold Standard Collective, launched in September 2024, to boost Spartan athletes’ earning potential.
On the field, Vick’s stacking bricks. In February, he signed 30 new players, including standouts like safety Caleb Turner and wide receiver Elijah Simley-Flores. “We are excited to welcome these 30 student-athletes,” he said, eager for spring practice.

His training sessions are filled with a lot of intensity. “You gotta take strides,” he told his team. “Stack good practice performances right now. We take it one day at a time.” The energy’s high, even if the offense is still getting to know each other.
Vick’s not shying from his past either; his 23 months in prison for a dogfighting scandal still spawns a lot of criticism from fans and rivals. However, he’s pushing forward from it all, adapting to coaching with a smile.
During a MEAC basketball tournament appearance, he shared his excitement: “This has been fun; to be acclimated and back involved in football, coaching… is the most exciting thing I’ve encountered in a long time.” Like Sanders, he’s turning heads and making history, one practice, one player, one day at a time.
