“One Of The Most Difficult Interviews I’ve Ever Done”: HoFer Michael Irvin Gets 100% Real On Talks With Deion Sanders Amid Mystery Health Concerns

During his most recent appearance on The Rich Eisen Show, Michael Irvin seemed to break down some more walls and give one of his most emotional and vulnerable interviews.

“That was one of the most difficult interviews I’ve ever done because I knew that Deion had cancer because he called me up and told me right away,” he added.

The news hit like lightning. Sanders was informed he had an aggressive form of bladder cancer and had surgery to remove it, but he kept this life-threatening battle pretty much from most of the world.

“I was actually carrying the burden of knowing and wouldn’t say anything to anybody,” he explained.

For Irvin, who has constructed his media career upon being genuine and emotionally engaged, remaining calm and collected when knowing that his friend was fighting for his life was nearly impossible.

Michael Irvin Gets Real About Deion Sanders’ Draft Day Heartbreak

The single most terrible part of Deion Sanders’ was the timing of the diagnosis when you think about the implications. Year after year, Sanders had been going through the grind as a father and on draft day 2024 turned into a day of unimaginable pain and forced smiles for Coach Prime.

“To hear him say that he was dealing with this on draft day, dude, you only get that day one time,” Irvin said. (3:37)

Irvin shared a scene that would break any parent’s heart. Deion Sanders, rather than focusing on his own battle, he was working on making a perfect moment for his son.

“If I can have this great day for my son, it can lift my spirit,” Irvin recalled Sanders’ thinking.

The outcome of draft day made the situation evermore heartbreaking. After all those years of work and preparation and anticipation, Shedeur Sanders was drafted at the 144th position, well below everyone’s expectations.

“That’s 20, 25 years of work for that one day, all gone,” Irvin reflected. “And everybody’s probably sitting around saying, man, he’s sitting on top of the world.”

As Deion Sanders looks toward the 2025 college football season, now cancer-free and ready to lead the Colorado Buffaloes, Coach Primes’ story is so compelling that it serves as a reminder of the power of belief and having faith.
