Hurricanes’ QB Cam Ward Breaks NCAA Career Passing Record

Heading into the Pop-Tarts Bowl today, Hurricanes’ quarterback Ward was tied with former Houston Cougars quarterback Case Keenum in career D-1 passing touchdowns.

He broke that tie with a touchdown pass to wide receiver Jacolby George late in the first quarter.

His feathery touch and excellent ball placement were on full display as Ward drew the defense with a fake handoff and lobbed it over the top for the four-yard touchdown.

That marked pass touchdown number 156 in his career, breaking a tie with Keenum and putting himself in sole possession of the record. He threw two more touchdowns in the first half, finishing his career with 158 career touchdown passes across five seasons before being pulled before the second half of the game.

Unranked out of high school, Ward began his career in 2020 at FCS Incarnate Word, where he threw a combined 71 touchdowns in his freshman and sophomore seasons. From there, he transferred to the Washington State Cougars, where he excelled, throwing for 48 touchdowns in two seasons in Pullman.

For his final year of eligibility, Ward traveled across the country to join the Hurricanes. He finished fourth in Heisman Trophy voting after leading Miami to a 10-2 regular season record, capping off a tremendous career in the college ranks.

Unfortunately for Miami, the Hurricanes couldn’t finish the deal once Ward exited the Pop-Tarts Bowl at halftime, up 31-28. A late Cyclones touchdown pushed them over the top to a 42-41 victory.

The reason for Ward being pulled early hasn’t been officially released yet, with rumors that he refused to play in the second half, but it was likely due to the protection of his draft stock, as he’s expected to be a high selection in the 2025 NFL Draft.
