Cam Ward’s NFL Dream Ties Back to the Team He Watched Growing Up

Playing for the Saints Would Be a ‘Dream Come True’ for Cam Ward

Cam Ward and the Saints met last month at the NFL Scouting Combine, where he spoke about his desire to play for Kellen Moore, a Super Bowl-winning coach with a winning background.

I loved watching Drew Brees and [Marques] Colston out there,” Ward said on Monday night via NOLA.com. “It would be a dream of mine to play for them if I get a chance someday. But that’s not my focus right now.”

Ward was also in New Orleans to accept the 2024 Manning Award when he commented about playing for the Saints. That award goes to the top quarterback in college football and is named after the accomplishments of the three Mannings: Archie, Peyton, and Eli.

Ward and Colorado’s Shedeur Sanders are among the two highest-rated quarterbacks in this year’s draft.

Ward is coming off an impressive season in which he had a 67% pass completion rate, 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns, and four rushing TDs. He was also a Heisman Trophy finalist this year and won the Davey O’Brien Award, as well as ACC Player of the Year.

The Saints hold the ninth pick in this year’s draft, so there is a good possibility that Ward will likely already be taken by another team when New Orleans picks.

The Tennessee Titans pick first overall, the Cleveland Browns second, and the New York Giants third. At least two of those three teams have already made it clear they are looking for a new signal-caller.

The Titans, in particular, have no clear number-one quarterback and seriously need someone like Ward, even if they have to work with a rookie pivot and build a team around him.

The Saints can start veteran QB Derek Carr and, with the ninth pick, select another player, as Scott Polacek’s Bleacher Report article noted, including a “tight end like Penn State’s Tyler Warren, an offensive lineman like LSU’s Will Campbell or a defensive player like Georgia’s Malaki Starks.”

Still, if Ward falls to the ninth pick, it’ll be interesting to see whether the team pulls the trigger on selecting their lifelong fan.
